Couple of images I did for our ZOO 2022 demoscene event. These are both made for Commodore 64, the other one is PETSCII using the 256 character set with one global colour (dark grey) and one chaning colour for each 8 x 8 px char. The other one is more developed mode QCH (quarter char hires) that allows to use two colours for each 8 x 2 px block in resolution of 320 x 200 px. C64 has a fixed palette of 16 colours in total.

If you want to try out these on your breadbox or emulator, you can find the PRG-files in here and here.

Down below some workstage animations just to show how these were made. Handmade TM.

Check out all the great 158 entries of ZOO 2022.

Some Commodore 64 pixel and PETSCII graphics I did for fun for our World Wide Zoo -event held 25th of September – an online C64 party with playful competitions. Just FYI, C64 has a fixed palette of 16 colours that you can’t change. PETSCII is a text graphic mode using 255 fixed charset with one global colour and one colour per 8×8 px character. Added animations so you can see how these were made, pixel by pixel or char by char. I’ve done stuff for C64 since 10 years old as a hobby. While in the past these were done on the real breadbox with a joystick (and one undo), these days I’m using mostly PhotoShop, a cross-platform tool Multipaint or Marq’s PETSCII editor. Zooparty is an association we’re running to support C64 demoscene in Finland and internationally. We’re arranging events and publishing SID music and printed stuff.

New pics on Commodore C64

Found some spare time to work on C-64 pixels again. This is the result that was released at our yearly summer meeting PsykoZ last weekend. That’s a meet we’ve done since 90s with bunch people who share an interest on working with this old great machine.

Just note that Commodore 64 has a fixed palette of 16 colours. There are several graphic modes where the resolutions and colour restrictions vary as well. In these the so called multicolour images are 160 x 100 px (with 2×1 wide ‘pixels + raster splits in borders) and hold one global colour and three changeable colours. With these I’ve used Dr. TerrorZ’s editor MultiPaint that’s suitable for other old platforms as well. The flickery one and portrait of Allen Ginsberg are PETSCII graphics, worked out with the 256 char character set of C-64. Try out Marq’s multiplatform editor to make those.

Download all the material + a lot of more from CSDB and run on original machine or emulator.

Thanks to TNT for most of the code.
